The 5th edition of tennis development camp ended yesterday at Duakwa- Central Region with Martha Kanyah of Nsaba Islamic School winning girls category and Hawal Abdul also from Nsaba Islamic School winning the boys division.
90 junior players, both boys and girls, participated in the three programs, which were held at El-Capitano Resort from May 25-27, 2018.
Day One
These juvenile players were taken through: Warm- Up exercises,walk around on the court on the lines marked, tapping the ball in the air (Players hit the ball into the air using the racket whiles walking around on the court), Hitting the ball on the court (players hit the ball on the court whiles walking around skill work), Players in pairs stand 5 meters apart and hit the ball to each other, Players hitting the ball 10 times continuously to gain a point, Players put into groups of 6 face each other 20 meters apart. Players run with a ball on the racket to give yo the other person and so on until everyone had a turn, Knock-out competition players of 6 in a group play against each other until you get an overall winner, Final game each player plays against each other until you get a final winner for boys and overall winner for girls.
DAY 2
Players warm-up by jogging from the center of the town to the courts at the resort, Arm stretching, Shoulder stretching, skill work,Tossing the ball by players, hit the ball to each other, play the ball 2 times and hit it back to a friend and the friend does the same, Rally play: players hit the ball to each other without making the ball fall to the ground, Players move to the net and play ‘Around the World’.That’s when the players play with one another in a particular group. Target play: players in rows run or walk, touch the net in front while other players behind the net hit the balls against the players to eliminate them out of the competition. All play all competition: Girls play against each other until we get the overall winner.
The competition, as always, was essentially targeted at exposing turning the raw talents into quality players that could in future become top stars.
The camp ended with competition which featured boys and girls. Martha Kanyah of Nsaba Islamic School won the girls the category and Hawal Abdul also from Nsaba Islamic School won the boys division.
Central Regional representative of Peter Mensah Sports Foundation (PMSPORTS) Ebenezer Tsumasi said " I am very confident these kids will soon emerge as world-class tennis players.
Without doubt, more programs such as JTI are a must if Ghana is to regain past glory as well as take on the world of tennis.
